Visually Impaired and Orientation and Mobility OpeningsOakland Schools is looking to fill the following openings:
Teacher Consultant, Visually Impaired
Provide professional development, direct and consultative services, evaluations/assessments, implementation strategies and technology support to Special Education professionals, students, and families in the local school districts of Oakland County. The goal is that students are provided access and services which will increase academic achievement and functional performance skills.
Requirements include MA in Special Education, valid MI Teaching Certification with SK endorsement, 3 or more yrs. classroom teaching experience with no less than 2 of them in Special Education, knowledge/ability to consider/recommend Assistive Technology equipment, provide Low Vision Assessments, knowledge of Special Education processes and documentation and general education curriculum and accommodations.

We are seeking to fill a1.0 FTE Teacher Consultant, VI/Orientation and Mobility Specialist for this position. However, based on candidates’ qualifications, we can split the position into one 0.5 FTE Teacher Consultant, VI position and one 0.5 FTE Orientation and Mobility Specialist position.
Requirements include MA in Special Education and/or Orientation and Mobility, valid MI Teaching Certification with SK endorsement, 3 or more yrs. classroom teaching experience with no less than 2 of them in Special Education, Orientation and Mobility certification, knowledge/ability to consider/recommend Assistive Technology equipment and Orientation and Mobility strategies and skills, provide Low Vision Assessments and Orientation and Mobility Evaluations, knowledge of Special Education processes and documentation and general education curriculum and accommodations. Note: If incumbent doesn’t currently hold a SK endorsement, they would be required to enroll in a program leading up to SK endorsement within 6 months of employment date and provide documented proof when completed.Note:

- MA degree in Orientation and Mobility from an AER accredited university or college required.
- Valid Orientation and Mobility Specialist Certificate (COMS) from ACVREP required.
- 3 years of related experience required.
- Experience working with students who are blind and visually impaired preferred.
- Knowledge of current state and Federal mandates related to instruction of students with disabilities.
- Knowledge and skills to consider appropriate Orientation and Mobility strategies.
- Valid Michigan driver’s license and ability to travel to local schools throughout Oakland County. Ability to provide professional development, consultation, and coaching.
