Job Description

Basic Purpose:
Positions in this family are involved in professional level work teaching standard academic or commercial subjects in a state school, hospital, facility or institution. This includes writing teaching plans, providing individual and group instruction, and participating in staff development training sessions.

Typical Functions:
• Prepares subject-specific lesson plans.
• Provides group classroom instruction for a specific grade level or subject and prepares and administers examinations.
• Encourages students learning through individual instruction, encouragement, counseling and guidance.
• Prepare progress reports and attendance reports for administrative review and report cards for individual students.
• Maintains order and discipline among students in the classroom and on school grounds; may direct social and recreational activities.
• Maintains inventory of books and supplies.
• Participate in staff meetings and provide reports on student progress.

Level Descriptor:
This job family consists of only one level and employees are responsible for performing all functions to provide instruction to students in standard academic or commercial subjects. In this role they will provide classroom teaching, maintain order and discipline, prepare test papers, grade tests, and provide individual progress assessment. They will also participate in staff development training sessions, direct student activities and perform related administrative functions.

Education and Experience:
Education and Experience requirements consist of possession of a current Oklahoma Teaching Certificate.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required include knowledge of principles, practices and materials used in the education of children; ability is required to instruct at a specified grade level or in a specialized field; and of the content matter in the specific field of knowledge. Ability is required to supervise and instruct pupils; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to organize and present lesson plans clearly and concisely; and to refine lesson objectives.

Additional Job Description:

Position is located at Oklahoma School for the Blind (OSB) in Muskogee.

Essential Functions: Position is an Assistive Technology Instructor. The Assistive Technology (AT) Instructor provides specialized training and support to individuals who are blind or visually impaired, empowering them to use assistive technology to achieve independence in education, daily living, and employment. This role combines direct instruction, technology assessments, curriculum development, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to ensure successful student outcomes.

Duties include:

• Provide individualized and group instruction in assistive technology to meet educational goals, including IEP objectives.
• Develop lesson plans, evaluate student performance, and assign grades based on assessment criteria.
• Train students in the use of screen readers (e.g., JAWS, NVDA), screen magnifiers (e.g., ZoomText), Braille displays and electronic notetakers, refreshable Braille devices and OCR tools, mobile accessibility features and apps (e.g., VoiceOver, TalkBack), accessible Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications.
• Instruct students in computer science-related courses, including robotics and 3D printing, as part of the academic curriculum.
• Maintain and oversee all hardware devices in the Assistive Technology Lab, including desktops, laptops, iPads, scanners, braille tablets, and digital book readers.
• Conduct technology assessments to determine appropriate tools and instructional strategies for each student.
• Stay current with emerging trends and updates in assistive technology.
• Provide technical troubleshooting and ongoing support to students and staff.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of student progress and instructional sessions.
• Attend IEP and staff meetings.
• Contribute to quarterly progress reports.
• Collaborate with Teachers, Orientation and Mobility Specialists, Vocational Rehabilitation counselors, and other support staff to ensure cohesive service delivery.
• Participate in community outreach, workshops, and events to raise awareness of assistive technology resources.

 

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation, education, assistive technology, computer science, or related field (Masters preferred).
  • Relevant certification(s) such as ACVREP Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist (CATIS) preferred.
  • Experience working with blind and visually impaired individuals.
  • Proficient in current assistive technology tools and software.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adapt instruction to a wide range of learners.

Annual salary range is commensurate with education and years of experience. Salary based on teacher salary schedule.
