Orientation and Mobility Specialist – COMS

Job Description:

Position Overview:

Under the supervision of the Manager/Director of Vision Rehabilitation, provides assessment and instruction in skills that enable visually impaired individuals to maximize their Orientation and Mobility skills and use of functional vision.

Essential functions:

· Assess the travel needs and functional level of each assigned and trains the necessary skills

· In cooperation with the client and the parents/guardian of a minor, develops an individualized training plan (ITP) and makes recommendations for adaptive devices for each client

· Maintains professional growth through professional reading and attendance at professional conferences

· Consults with professionals in other fields of the merits and limitations of mobility devices and technologies

· Performs evaluations that may include lighting, solar shields, and magnification

· Participates in regular department meetings, and ITP conferences to review the client’s progress toward the ITP objectives

· Completes all required and requested written documentation of services as scheduled as well as all other paperwork required by the department

· Assist with public education programs to expand community awareness about people with visual impairments

· Other duties assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

· Excellent and effective communication skills (verbal and written)

· Ability to work effectively with people with vision impairments and relates well to people with multiple disabilities

· Ability to work well under stress

· Excellent teaching skills

· Ability to work effectively in a variety of settings

· Knowledge of community resources

· Knowledge of common eye conditions

· Knowledge of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act is helpful

· Must possess the ability to perform well in both a collaborative, team environment and independently

· Superb organizational skills

· Effective public speaking skills.

· Proficient computer literacy

Qualifications:

COMS certification preferred or eligible for certification within 12 months

Must be ACVREP certifiable or certified

Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree from an accredited university training program in Orientation and Mobility
