The Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) provides individual and small group instruction that helps people who are visually impaired and blind to safely, confidently, and independently access their homes, workplaces, schools, and communities.
The COMS will work primarily with senior adults who have developed a vision impairment later in life, however, they may also work with a limited number of students through contracts with local school systems.
This is a full–time (Monday through Friday, 8 AM – 4 PM) office-based position, which reports directly to the Director of Vision Rehabilitation. The COMS works as part of an inter-disciplinary team that includes a vision rehabilitation teacher and an optometrist.
Essential Functions
· Assist clients to develop mobility goals.
· Develop training schedules and lesson plans to address individual client needs.
· Complete progress reports, maintain service records (monthly statistics), and attend regularly scheduled department meetings.
· Work with clients in their home situations as a transition to completion of program.
· Conduct public education workshops for allied professionals and client families.
Qualifications
· Minimum BS Degree.
· ACVREP Certification in Orientation and Mobility
