The Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired SC (ABVI) is looking for multiple Dual-Certified Teachers for the Visually Impaired / Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialists (COMS) to join our dedicated team in the Midlands, Pee Dee, and Upstate regions of South Carolina, starting in the 2025/26 school year.
This itinerant position will serve individuals by:
· Instructing school-aged students or adults with low vision or blindness to improve their education, mobility, and independent functioning.
· Assessing developmental, visual, and adaptive needs in areas such as cognition, literacy, social self-help, and other aspects specific to low vision and blindness.
· Developing appropriate IEPs (Individualized Education Plans) or treatment plans based on assessments.
· Providing instruction in the client’s natural environment—home, school, or community.

Qualifications
· Experience in conducting assessments for individuals with low vision and/or multiple disabilities. Proficient in evaluating and teaching concept development, spatial orientation, independent travel, self-help, and related skills. Knowledge of the expanded core curriculum and experience with braille. Skilled in Functional Vision Assessments and Literacy Media Assessments. Strong computer skills. Expertise in assistive technology for individuals with low vision. Ability to work collaboratively to support skill development.
· At least two (2) years’ experience working with individuals who are blind or have low vision is preferred. Recent graduates will be considered.
· Bachelor’s degree in human services or related field, early childhood education, elementary education, or special education. Master’s Degree preferred.
· Certification as TVI and COMS (from Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals). Non-TVI certified applicants will be considered for a COMS-only position in the PeeDee. Must have a valid driver’s license.
