Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist and/or Certified Low Vision Therapist

Job Description:

At ABVI, our mission is to empower individuals who are blind or have low vision to live fulfilling, purpose-driven lives. These positions support the overall mission of ABVI by providing training and support to individuals who are blind or have low vision by teaching people the skills and techniques to enhance their independence and quality of life. These positions assess clients’ needs, designs rehabilitation plans, and deliver therapy in areas such as activities of daily living, assistive technology, and adaptive techniques.

Key Responsibilities may include:

  • Conducting thorough assessments of clients’ visual functioning, functional abilities, and rehabilitation goals.
  • Develops individualized treatment plans based on clients’ strengths, needs, preferences, and goals.
  • Providing instruction and training in orientation and mobility techniques, including indoor and outdoor travel skills, the use of mobility aids (e.g., canes, guide dogs), and environmental awareness.
  • Teaching activities of daily living (ADL) skills, such as personal grooming, meal preparation, household management, and money management, using adaptive techniques and assistive devices.
  • Assisting clients in learning and using assistive technology devices and adaptive equipment to facilitate independent living and communication.
  • Monitoring clients’ progress, adjusting rehabilitation plans as needed, and providing ongoing support and encouragement to promote skill development and independence.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitation Teaching, Vision Rehabilitation Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Orientation and Mobility, or a related field from an accredited institution. Master’s Degree preferred.

Experience: At least two (2) years’ experience working with individuals who are blind/visually impaired. Recent graduates will be considered.

Licensures and certifications: Certification as a Vision Rehabilitation Therapist (CVRT), Low Vision Therapist (CLVT) or eligibility for certification through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP). Must have a valid driver’s license.
