The job of Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments was established for the purpose/s of providing direct and/or consultative special education to students with various from birth to 21 related to vision loss.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Assists in determining and procuring classroom equipment, materials and room modifications necessary for the student (e.g. Braille, low vision devices, assistive technology, computer) for the purpose of assisting students with visual impairments.
• Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of student goals.
• Consults and liaises with diagnosticians, ophthalmologist, optometrist, classroom teacher, parents and agencies for the purpose of to provide appropriate accommodations for the student.
• Contributes to the development of the ER and IEP/IFSP goals, modifications primary learning media and specially designed instruction for the purpose of delivering quality instruction to the student.
• Maintains updated pupil information, progress reports, assessment records (e.g. PennData, federal quota, deafblind census, textbook access needs, IEP’s, ER’s progress reports parental releases) for the purpose of to ensure progress toward student goals.
• Obtains modified standardized testing materials and administer the test as needed for the purpose of to accommodate the students’ disabilities.
• Performs functional vision and learning media assessments on new referrals (e.g. Oregon Project, insite, Hawaii, Boehme, LAP, ELAP) for the purpose of assessing students’ abilities.
• Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. IEPs and ERs) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
• Recommends appropriate specialized evaluations as needed (e.g. low vision, orientation and mobility, psycho-social and adaptive physical education) for the purpose of assess student needs.
• Register students with appropriate agencies for the purpose of ensuring delivery of appropriate services.
• Directs assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student workers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students.
• Participates in a variety of meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
• Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
• Provides input into student schedules (e.g. direct instruction and orientation and mobility) for the purpose of to ensure all enough time to deliver needed instruction.
• Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g. other teachers, parents, administrators, etc.) for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and/or direction.

Qualifications

Education Required: Bachelor’s degree in job related area

Certification Required: PDE Certification required

Experience Required: Job related experience required
